Hutchinson’s career started with one of those origin stories that felt like a fluke until it wasn’t. His 2007 self-released debut, Sounds Like This, hit number five on the iTunes Store and debuted at number one on the Billboard Heatseekers chart — the highest-charting album by an unsigned artist in iTunes history at the time. That kind of debut sets expectations, and Hutchinson has spent the years since meeting them across a catalog that moves between piano pop, soul, folk, Americana, and jazz like he cannot help himself.
He is back now with Repeating Myself, his first new album in four years — described as a joyous return to the piano pop and singer-songwriter soul of his debut. The record developed while Hutchinson was celebrating the 15th anniversary of Sounds Like This, and that context is audible: he wanted something immediate and raw, and by all accounts he found it.
The setlist pulls from the new record alongside the fan staples — “Tell the World,” “A Little More,” “Dear Me” — plus tracks from across a catalog with more depth than its radio-friendly surface suggests.
