The résumé behind Hard Promises is easy to overlook when the billing reads “Tom Petty tribute.” Lead vocalist Jeff Gordon spent the early 1990s fronting Joe Bonamassa’s touring group, working rooms where B.B. King and Buddy Guy were also on the bill. The five Central New York musicians behind this band have been working the Heartbreakers’ catalog for years, long enough to approach it with something closer to stewardship than novelty — and on Saturday, Dec. 19, they bring “Another Petty Christmas” to Middle Ages Beer Hall in Syracuse, a holiday-framed Petty night that closes out their 2026 run.
About the Show
Hard Promises originated as a Tom Petty tribute act and continues to anchor its sets in that catalog, though the band draws from the broader classic rock library as well: Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Cars, Boston, Journey. For this December engagement, “Another Petty Christmas” signals a holiday-themed evening dedicated to Petty’s songs rather than a general-catalog swing. The band’s 2026 included headlining The Pageant in St. Louis in May and returning there in November, a multi-state touring footprint that puts this Syracuse homecoming in context.
The shared-stage list Hard Promises brings into a room is not nothing: Cheap Trick, Gregg Allman, Joan Jett, Blue Oyster Cult, Blues Traveler, Dickey Betts, B.B. King, Loverboy, and Bret Michaels figure among the national acts the band has opened for. Gordon’s early career took him through the Bonamassa band’s touring circuit in the early 1990s, working dates where King and Buddy Guy were also on the bill, formative experience that informs how this group approaches classic material. The full lineup is Kevin Farrell on lead guitar, John Goodwin on keyboards, Todd Troubetaris on bass, and Eric Wilson on drums, each drawing from Central New York’s working-band pool: Kane, Benny Mardones’ Hurricanes, The Shop, Custom Taylor, and Joey Belladonna’s Chief Big Way. Gordon has put the band’s philosophy plainly: “the enjoyment of playing music…with band mates is something you can enjoy for a lifetime.”
