It’s A 2000’s Party is a touring DJ concept from Slacker Media Group, not a traditional band, and it has done more business than the premise might suggest. The spring tour pulled close to 50,000 fans across 50 cities, sold out venues in Burlington and Indianapolis, and included House of Blues stops along the way. It arrives at Empire Live on Friday, August 28.
About the Show
Slacker Media Group is a Newton, Massachusetts-based event production company that founder Ross Friedman describes as a curator rather than a promoter. “We see ourselves as event curators, not just event producers or promoters,” Friedman has said. He started as a DJ at 16, throwing a 400-person all-ages event at the Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge, a show that proved the concept before there was a company around it. He built Slacker Media Group while attending Suffolk University; the company now assembles nationally touring DJs, production designers, and marketers for each stop, books through Wasserman Music, and has moved over 250,000 tickets across its touring brands.
It’s A 2000’s Party is Slacker’s 2000s-themed event brand: Y2K-focused DJ sets running through pop, hip-hop, and rock hits of the decade. The promo shorthand names Britney Spears and Eminem as representative artists; press coverage places the range as far as Lil Wayne, drawing attendees back to the club and radio sounds of the era. Promo copy at other tour stops invokes “the era of low-rise jeans and flip phones,” and Y2K fashion is encouraged. The format is general admission and standing room only. VIP upgrades have been available at select dates, including bowling lane and VIP box reservations at the Nashville stop.
The August 28 Albany stop is part of a late-summer stretch that includes Brooklyn Bowl Nashville and Music Farm in Charleston.

Empire Live is on North Pearl Street in downtown Albany, a standing-room floor that concentrates the crowd rather than distributing it across rows of seats. Showtime is 8:00 p.m. The prior It’s A 2000’s Party show at Empire Live, on January 30, carried a 21+ age restriction; the policy for August 28 has not been confirmed from a primary source.
