Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at Tanglewood | July 28, 2026

By Nate Calloway · April 7, 2026

Jason Isbell writes the kind of songs that make a room go quiet. Across Southeastern, The Nashville Sound, and the Grammy-sweeping Weathervanes, he has built a catalog that treats ordinary people with uncommon care — the addict, the parent, the person trying to get the next thing right. He does not condescend and he does not romanticize. He tells the truth, precisely, in three or four minutes. On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, he and the 400 Unit bring that catalog to Tanglewood, and they are doing it for the first time.

This is Isbell’s Tanglewood debut, part of the venue’s Popular Artist Series, and he is not arriving alone. Patty Griffin — another songwriter’s songwriter, and also making her first Tanglewood appearance — opens the evening. Two writers of that caliber on one bill in the Berkshires is the sort of pairing you circle on the calendar in October and wait out the winter for.

About Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

Isbell is a six-time Grammy winner. Weathervanes took Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Song for “Cast Iron Skillet” at the 2024 ceremony, which surprised exactly no one who had been paying attention. The 400 Unit is the engine underneath all of it — a band that can swing into full-throated rock on one song and pull back to a whisper on the next, leaving Isbell’s voice and a single guitar to carry the weight. Live, that dynamic range is the whole point. The loud songs hit harder because the quiet ones earned it.

Venue Info

The show lands at the Koussevitzky Music Shed, Tanglewood’s open-sided main stage in Lenox, Massachusetts, with the famous lawn rolling out behind it. Late July is the Berkshires at full summer — long light that lingers past eight, a hillside of blankets and folding chairs, and acoustics built across decades of hosting the Boston Symphony. For a songwriter whose work rewards close listening, it is close to an ideal room, indoors or out. Spread a blanket, bring a bottle of something, and let the evening go long.
