There is a particular kind of blues that has no use for a light rig or a six-piece band. It asks for a room small enough that you can feel the kick drum in your sternum, where every string buzz carries and nothing gets lost in the air. The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, a trio out of Brown County, Indiana, is built for exactly that kind of room. Daryl’s House in Pawling is exactly that kind of room. When the two meet on Saturday, May 2, something is going to click.

Josh “Reverend” Peyton is one of the more serious fingerstyle guitarists working in American roots music today. His playing draws directly from the Mississippi delta tradition — he studied under blues masters T-Model Ford and Robert Belfour — and the trio delivers original compositions in that lineage without nostalgia and without distance. Breezy Peyton holds down the washboard with a confidence that makes you understand why the instrument exists, and Jacob “The Snakob” Powell’s drumming gives the whole thing weight without filling in what the music leaves open. They describe their shows as handmade, and that is the right word. Crowds tend to leave clapping, stomping, and singing along, because this music has a way of demanding it.

The band has topped the blues charts — Billboard, iTunes, Sirius XM — performed across 38 countries and 48 U.S. states, and at their peak logged close to 250 tour dates in a year. Their most recent album was produced by Grammy winner Vance Powell, whose production work with Jack White and Chris Stapleton tells you everything about the kind of raw, full-bodied sound he knows how to capture. The record earned the reception it deserved.

Daryl’s House is one of the better rooms in the Hudson Valley for this kind of show. Opened in 2014 by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Daryl Hall, the club sits on Route 22 in Pawling, Dutchess County, and offers an intimate setting with a sound system that punches well above what you might expect. Dinner service is available through the evening, and the room is built to let the music land the way it is supposed to.

Doors open at 5:00 PM, show at 8:00 PM. All ages. Tickets run $28.69–$33.84. Buy Tickets. See the Daryl’s House venue page for directions and details. More shows across the region: Hudson Valley concerts.
