Grammy-winning Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue bring their fall 2026 tour to Troy, with Abraham Alexander, a Texas-raised folk, gospel, blues, and soul singer-songwriter, opening the evening. Troy Andrews earned his nickname as a child in New Orleans’ Tremé neighborhood, where his trombone was literally longer than he was tall. He made his public debut at age four at Jazz Fest alongside Bo Diddley and was leading his own brass band by six.
Five studio albums, from the Grammy-nominated Backatown (2010) through Lifted in 2022, trace a career that grew from Tremé brass-band tradition into the hybrid Andrews calls “supafunkrock”: jazz, funk, rock, soul, and hip-hop held together by horn lines that are always doing the actual work. Orleans Avenue is built around that vocabulary; they phrase with the ease of a jazz ensemble and hit with the volume of a rock outfit, which is how concerts end up feeling like both a street parade and a festival main stage at once.
Andrews has headlined Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza, performed six times at the White House, played the 2025 Super Bowl, and closes the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s final set each year, a distinction that carries particular weight in a city that takes its music seriously. Capital Region audiences have their own feel for what that energy means in a hall: Nippertown’s Greg Haymes has written that “whenever Trombone Shorty is in town, we’re partyin'” — which, as descriptions of what tends to happen, proves accurate.
