Thundercat at Buffalo RiverWorks | October 24, 2026

By David Chen-Watkins · July 26, 2026

The title of Thundercat’s fifth album is Distracted — a record built around overstimulation, digital-age fragmentation, and heartbreak. Critics noticed the irony almost immediately: the result may be the most focused and cohesive album Stephen Bruner has made. That productive contradiction has been his signature all along.

About the Show

Thundercat, born Stephen Bruner in Los Angeles, is a Grammy-winning bassist, singer, and songwriter bringing the Distracted AF Tour to Buffalo RiverWorks on Saturday, October 24, with TiaCorine as support. The tour travels behind Distracted (Brainfeeder, April 3, 2026), Bruner’s fifth studio album and his first in six years since It Is What It Is. By critical consensus it’s a heartbreak album, featuring A$AP Rocky, WILLOW, The Lemon Twigs, and Tame Impala, with production from Greg Kurstin and Flying Lotus. Critics describe it as an album on which Bruner “channels his phantasmagoric jazz fusion” into its sharpest form: a record that captures “the addled feeling of contemporary overstimulation” and repurposes it for creative fuel.

The arc of Bruner’s career resists simple categorization. He was at the creative epicenter of Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, earning a Grammy for his contribution to “These Walls,” and his 2020 album It Is What It Is won Best Progressive R&B Album at the 63rd Grammy Awards. Along the way he has collaborated with Gorillaz, Silk Sonic, HAIM, H.E.R., and Kaytranada, among others. The Los Angeles Times dubbed him “Los Angeles’ King of the Bass”; Rolling Stone called him “the rare talent who can build a career on the swampy but fertile soil where tragedy and comedy meet.” Distracted demonstrates that the tragicomic mode is alive, and that the falsetto Bruner pairs with his bass work has grown as central to his art as the instrument itself.

The Distracted AF Tour runs 32 dates across North America, October 2 through December 11, 2026, following a recent support stint alongside the Strokes.
