Willi Carlisle says he wants to write songs that prove the old weird America didn’t go anywhere. The Universal Bubba Tour, which plays Mohawk Place in Buffalo on Friday, October 2, is his argument for that: 17 tracks from a career-first double album produced by Tyler Childers, landed in a room small enough that you can actually hear what’s happening inside all of them.

The Universal Bubba is Carlisle’s sixth album, and it doesn’t officially land until November 6, which puts the Buffalo stop more than a month ahead of the release. That’s the kind of timing that rewards being there. Carlisle is a folksinger who has made a career documenting the stories and struggles of everyday people, known for songs like “Cheap Cocaine,” and this album is the most expansive thing he’s attempted. Recorded in two weeks at a makeshift home studio in New Orleans’ Bywater District, it moves through funk, Cajun, oldtime, Americana, and what Carlisle calls “experimental music,” with synthesizers and double electric guitars appearing in his work for the first time, alongside substantial fretless 19th-century-style banjo. He describes the vibe as “getting drunk at the Civil War reenactment, or cruising at the cattle auction, or doing molly at the square dance” — not the most systematic account of a folk record you’ll read this year, but probably the most accurate. “The universal bubba,” Carlisle explains, “is somebody who can fix anything, somebody who is good for just about anything.” The album opener, “The Mason Jar at the Center of the World,” was written during Tyler Childers’ 2024–2025 Mule Pull Tour, with Childers later stepping in as producer for his first official production credit. Carlisle tours North America through December 2026; the Buffalo date falls while the record is still in pre-order, which means the room at Mohawk Place gets to hear most of this before the wider world does. Mohawk Place sits on East Mohawk Street in downtown Buffalo, one of the better listening rooms in western New York for music that lives at this range of the dial, compact enough that nothing gets diffused and close enough that you catch the humor in Carlisle’s delivery along with the weight.
