There is a particular satisfaction to the Yacht Lobsters booking a two-night stand at Daryl Hall’s own club in Pawling. The band’s repertoire draws from Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, Toto, and Hall & Oates — yes, Hall & Oates, at Daryl Hall’s room — and February 4 is Night Two of that run, which tells you something about the demand for what this band does in a 300-seat Hudson Valley club on a Thursday night in February.
About the Show
The Yacht Lobsters formed in New York City in 2022, borrowing their name in part from The B-52’s “Rock Lobster,” founded by the team behind Brother Joscephus and the Love Revolution. The ensemble is built around bandleader and frontman David Mendelsohn, music director and arranger Dean Franse, and keyboardist Michael Moshan, backed by a full horn section drawn from New York City’s professional musician pool. Their repertoire spans roughly 1974 to 1983: Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, Hall & Oates, Toto, plus what the band calls “yacht rock adjacent” material from ABBA and the Bee Gees. What separates them from a standard tribute night is the arrangement philosophy: NOLA funk, classic rock, and jazz improvisation woven through familiar songs, alongside original compositions calibrated to sound like they were recorded in 1978.
Bandleader Mendelsohn has described the approach directly: “We go beyond copying music by taking songs that we heard a million times and love, and doing something unique.” Keyboardist Moshan put the repertoire in more personal terms: “These songs are baked into my DNA — the songs I listened to driving with my father.” The band has built a circuit through venues including Brooklyn Bowl, Gramercy Theatre, and Musikfest Café in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Hudson Valley connection runs deeper than one booking: Moshan lives in Irvington, and the group played the Irvington Theater in September 2025. Irvington Theater Commission Co-Chair Shana Liebman has called them “one of the country’s most popular yacht rock bands.”
