John Lennon heard The Cars and thought of the 1950s. “I think The Cars’ Touch and Go is right out of the fifties…with eighties styling,” he observed. It’s an odd compliment from a man who helped bury the decade, but it explains something about why that catalog endures: underneath the synthesizers and Ocasek’s detached cool is a music built on chord progressions so clean they sound inevitable. Best Friend’s Girl, returning to Daryl’s House for the third time in a little over two years, makes its case that the material deserves a room this intimate.

The New Jersey-based tribute act performs material spanning the original Cars’ catalog: “Best Friend’s Girl,” “Shake It Up,” “Magic,” “Let’s Go,” and “Moving in Stereo,” the track that found a second audience through its placement in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Singer John Starr handles both Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr vocal duties, no small task given that the two had markedly different registers the original band deployed strategically. The Cars’ original lineup (Ocasek, Orr, Greg Hawkes, Elliot Easton, and David Robinson) formed in Boston in 1976, emerging during the transition between disco and punk eras with a sound that was neither, and sold over 23 million albums across a 35-year career, placing more than 22 songs on the Billboard Top 100. Best Friend’s Girl bills itself as “America’s Favorite Cars Experience” and has built an active touring schedule in 2026, with dates stretching from New York to Illinois. This marks the band’s third appearance at Daryl’s House since September 2024, making the Pawling club a regular stop on their Northeast circuit.
Venue & Logistics
Daryl’s House Club sits on Route 22 in Pawling, in the Hudson Valley. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Daryl Hall opened the club in 2014 as a physical extension of his “Live from Daryl’s House” web series, built to let “people see what musicians are really like, when they are relaxed and among friends.” Hall personally designed the space, which features an 18th-century barn aesthetic. At 300 capacity, the room is intimate enough that the band’s execution of synthesizer-driven new wave (material built for radio and larger stages) gets a considerably closer read than usual. Doors open at 5:00 p.m.
