Free Fallin has been working the Tom Petty songbook internationally for nearly two decades, and the staying power behind that run isn’t hard to explain: few American rock catalogs hold up in a live room the way Petty’s does. The songs — spanning the Heartbreakers’ chart years, The Traveling Wilburys’ improbable all-star detour, and the broader album-oriented rock canon Petty helped define — were written for rooms where everyone already knows the words. Petty died in October 2017, but the audience for that material hasn’t gone anywhere. The group brings its “Tom Petty Concert Experience” production to The Showroom at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona on Friday, Jan. 8.
About the Show
The group started touring in 2007 on the appropriately modest “Gotta Start Somewhere Tour” and has been logging serious road miles ever since. The 2018 “Broken Hearted Tour” became the benchmark: more than 90 shows across 15 states, and an invitation to perform at Tom Petty’s Birthday Weekend celebration in Gainesville, Florida, the kind of endorsement a tribute act can’t manufacture. The 2019 “Legacy Tour” covered nearly 20 states. The current run, the 2026 “American Girl Tour,” extends into early 2027 with stops in Alabama, Florida, Minnesota, and Connecticut; the Verona date is the group’s only announced New York stop on this stretch, and by the band’s own description, Northeast appearances are occasional rather than routine.
Free Fallin’s approach centers on reconstruction rather than impression: period-appropriate instruments and attire, a production designed to recreate what the band calls “the raw energy of one of rock’s most iconic songwriters.” The set draws from both the Heartbreakers catalog and The Traveling Wilburys, covering “American Girl,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” and “End of the Line.” Steve Martin of the Capital Center for the Arts described the experience simply: “as good as it gets when you want to experience what a Tom Petty concert was like.”
