Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration at Bethel Woods | August 30, 2026

The calculus of bringing Jerry Garcia’s catalog to a symphonic format is not simple. The music — loose, improvisational, built around extended passages that seem to resist notation — was never written for orchestras. And yet something about hearing these songs lifted by strings and brass keeps drawing serious musicians and serious audiences back to the experiment. On August 30, the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration arrives at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts for an 8:00 PM show, which is to say it arrives at exactly the right address.

About Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration

The format has precedent. Between 2013 and 2016, Warren Haynes anchored a series of Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration shows at serious orchestral venues — Red Rocks, Tanglewood, Symphony Hall Boston — pulling songs like “Dark Star,” “Bird Song,” and “Scarlet Begonias” through full symphonic arrangements with considerable results. The 2026 edition builds its cast around musicians who knew the Garcia ecosystem from inside it rather than as admirers looking in.

Melvin Seals — the Hammond B-3 organist who spent 18 years with the Jerry Garcia Band — is the most significant presence here. There is no way to overstate what those 18 years mean in terms of institutional knowledge. Seals wasn’t interpreting Garcia’s music from studio recordings; he was making it alongside him, night after night, in the rooms that defined what jam band music would become. His presence lends this project a credibility that no orchestral arrangement can manufacture on its own.

Grahame Lesh, son of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, rounds out the ensemble alongside Tom Hamilton, Jacklyn LaBranch, John Morgan Kimock, and Kanika Moore — a collective with enough Dead-adjacent experience to give the symphonic framing something real to work against rather than a tribute-act approximation of it.

About Bethel Woods Center for the Arts

There are few venues in the Northeast where a show like this carries as much literal weight as it does at Bethel Woods. The 16,000-capacity outdoor amphitheater in Sullivan County sits on the grounds of the original 1969 Woodstock festival site — the same hillside where Garcia and the Dead played in August of that year. The Bethel Woods Museum documents that history in detail, and on a clear late-August evening in the Hudson Valley, that history is palpable in a way that no indoor room can replicate. If the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration is going to work anywhere in the Northeast this summer, it will work here.
