The door is on your left at 93 N Pearl St. From there you head downstairs into Empire Underground — the basement room of the Empire Live Albany complex, a two-floor venue in the heart of downtown Albany that opened in fall 2021. The whole room was built to close the gap between the band and the crowd. On Friday, July 10, Maul is walking through that door, and that design philosophy is going to be tested at volume.
Maul is a death metal trio from Fargo, North Dakota. Garrett Alvarado plays guitar and handles vocals, Anthony Lamb plays guitar, and Robby Anderson is on drums. They have been at it since 2017 — built from collaborations that started in high school on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota — and they have spent the years since logging enough miles to earn the label “a touring juggernaut.” Press coverage keeps landing on the same phrase: their music is “tailored to the environs of a dank club.” Empire Underground, at around 350 people, is precisely that kind of room.
They signed to 20 Buck Spin in 2023, which is about as clear a signal as you get that a death metal band is doing something right. Their second full-length, In The Jaws Of Bereavement, dropped in October 2024 with production tracked, mixed, and mastered by Adam Tucker at Signaturetone Recordings in Minneapolis — described as “clear and in-your-face.” Reference points include Gatecreeper, Obituary, Terminal Nation, and Sanguisugabogg, but Maul threads in atmospheric and experimental stretches that keep things from being entirely predictable. Festival slots at Sonic Temple and Welcome To Rockville, plus a 2025 run with The Acacia Strain and Frozen Soul, puts their current trajectory in context.
