Mike DelGuidice spent over a decade leading Big Shot, the Billy Joel tribute band he founded on Long Island in 2000. He performed a mini-set at the 12/12/12 Superstorm Sandy benefit at Madison Square Garden in December 2012, and left with a personal invitation from Billy Joel to join his official touring band. He has been there since 2013. The tribute artist, in other words, became the real thing.
On Friday, October 2, DelGuidice brings his own ensemble to The Showroom at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona. The band draws from members of Billy Joel’s touring group, alumni from the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Movin’ Out, and performers from the Last Play at Shea concerts. The show is not a replica act playing to nostalgia. The man leading it has played this music, in this configuration, alongside the artist who wrote it.
About Mike DelGuidice
A Long Island native born in 1971, DelGuidice plays piano, bass, guitar, and drums, though the voice is what defines the live experience. He has released three solo albums — My Street, Miller Place, and Mask Production — written the CBS sitcom theme (“Ordinary Guy” for Kevin Can Wait), and launched Live on the Porch, a Facebook Live concert series started in 2017 that found its broadest audience during the pandemic years. His work has drawn coverage from Rolling Stone, CNN, and The Today Show.
The band he tours with is over-qualified for most rooms. Saxophonist Bryan Steele has performed alongside Aretha Franklin and Steven Tyler; bassist Nick Dimichino came through Nine Days; woodwind player Mark Fineberg carries Broadway credits spanning Jersey Boys to Riverdance. A typical set runs around ninety minutes through the Billy Joel catalog and classic rock material — handled with the fluency of musicians who have played this material professionally, rather than with the studied reverence of tribute.
The Venue
The Showroom at Turning Stone Resort Casino is among the better-suited rooms in Central New York for this kind of evening. The Verona resort operates a separate, larger Event Center for major bookings; The Showroom is the intimate configuration, where the scale suits the performance. Turning Stone is a full-service casino resort — the infrastructure is there if you are making a full night of it.
