The New York Times called Morgan James “a phenomenal talent whose feel for classic soul music is bone deep.” What she has done with that feel is take it into the catalog of Metallica, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, and Soundgarden, and build something that refuses to be contained by either tradition. Soul Remains the Same, her sixth studio album, comes to Daryl’s House in Pawling on Tuesday, December 8.
About the Show
Released August 8, 2025, Soul Remains the Same finds James reinterpreting rock and metal standards through a soulful lens. It sounds like a contradiction until you hear what she does with “Thunderstruck” (horn flourishes, rolling drums, urgent storytelling) or the closing “Tonight, Tonight,” recorded in a single unedited take, the vocals carrying the full emotional weight. Illustrate Magazine called the record “an electrifying soul revival tour through heavy rock and metal songs of the ’80s and ’90s, through the lens of classic soul,” noting that James delivers with “soulful, feminine fire.” Genre boundaries, the review concluded, are “more like suggestions.”
James came to soul by a circuitous route: Juilliard opera training, Broadway credits in The Addams Family (2010) and Motown: The Musical (2013), and a mentorship under Barry Gordy Jr. that redirected her toward developing her own voice. She has been recording independently since 2017. Performing with her December 8 is Doug Wamble — her husband and, since 2012, her album producer and touring musical director. He built Soul Remains the Same around a four-horn section of Juilliard Jazz students and keys by Julius Rodriguez. The New Yorker once described Wamble as “a one-man compendium of avant Americana,” and his range confirms it: collaborations with Wynton Marsalis and Norah Jones, documentary scores for Ken Burns across Vietnam, Jackie Robinson, and Muhammad Ali. The show is all ages.
Venue & Logistics
Daryl’s House sits on Route 22 in Pawling, a 300-capacity club in the Hudson Valley. Within the context of this tour — which also runs through the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, the Orpheum Theatre in Phoenix, and Segerstrom Hall in Costa Mesa — it is the intimate room, where the distance between James and her audience shrinks to something considerably closer.
