The Azures are the kind of band you hear about from a friend who caught them at a Jersey Shore club and could not stop talking about it for a month. Psychedelic blues rock with delta blues roots, politically charged lyrics, and a live reputation built on commanding stage presence and the unexpected — they arrive at Buffalo Iron Works on Thursday, May 7, with local hard rockers Little Liar opening.
About The Azures
Four members out of Toms River and Asbury Park, New Jersey: Gia Rose on vocals and lyrics, Ashton Millman on guitar, Clarissa Kerlin on bass, Eric Brody on drums. They launched their 2023 self-titled debut LP with a co-headline show at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park — that one data point does a lot to calibrate the band’s standing on the Jersey Shore circuit.
Their sophomore record, Among the Deranged, goes further: ten tracks of Beat Poetry, psychedelia, delta blues, progressive rock, and punk, layered with horns, keyboards, and percussion ensembles. Comparisons to Funkadelic are not a stretch. Rose on the record’s standout track: “‘Erase the Command’ is a call to revolution, a harbinger of the uprising against fascism.” This is music with a point of view.
Opening the night is Little Liar — a hard rock band from the outskirts of Buffalo drawing on Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. They put out their debut record, Liquor, Lust & Anguish, in 2023. Good local support for a night that should get loud.
