Southern rock has always had a complicated relationship with time. Bands formed in the early seventies — the ones who came up alongside the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd and got swept into the same cultural moment — have spent the better part of fifty years trying to keep something essential alive through lineup changes, label disputes, and the particular grief of losing bandmates who helped define the music. The Outlaws, who bring their triple-guitar assault to The Showroom at Turning Stone Resort Casino on Friday, August 7, have navigated all of it.

About The Outlaws

The band formed in Tampa in 1972, built around a deceptively simple formula that founder Henry Paul once articulated with characteristic precision: “Sing like the Eagles, play like the Allmans.” That tension — close harmony over extended, serpentine guitar work — is what separated The Outlaws from their Southern rock contemporaries and what made tracks like “Green Grass & High Tides” and “There Goes Another Love Song” stick. Their first three albums on Arista Records — where they were among the first acts signed by Clive Davis — all went gold or platinum, and the band logged miles on the same touring circuit as the Rolling Stones, The Who, and the Eagles.

The decades since have been harder. Co-founders Frank O’Keefe and Billy Jones died in 1995. Guitarist Hughie Thomasson, whose playing was central to the band’s identity, died in September 2007. Paul, who had stepped away multiple times — including to found the platinum country act BlackHawk — reassumed leadership in 2008 alongside original drummer Monte Yoho. The reconstituted band has been grinding ever since, logging upwards of 150 shows per year and releasing their most recent studio album, Dixie Highway, in 2020. That kind of schedule, at this point in a career, says something about commitment, even if the genre no longer commands the cultural real estate it once did.
