The Skycoasters arrived at Eastman Theatre on April 26 as the inaugural recipients of the Rochester Music Hall of Fame’s newly created Local Legends category — an honor that required no explanation to anyone who has spent time in upstate New York’s live music circuit over the past six decades. Less than seven weeks later, they’ll be back doing what they actually do: a full nine-piece set at The Vine Showroom at del Lago Resort & Casino in Waterloo, on Friday, June 12.
About The Skycoasters
Founded in 1968 at Brighton High School in Rochester, The Skycoasters have outlasted trends, venues, and entire eras of popular music without substantially altering their formula — which is either a testament to conviction or a recognition that a horn-heavy, soul-and-funk party band simply does not go out of style. In nearly 60 years of performing, the band has appeared at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and the 1996 Games in Atlanta, played the NFL Super Bowl, the Goodwill Games, and the Indianapolis 500, and shared stages with The Beach Boys, Chicago, The Four Tops, Hall & Oates, and Gene Cornish of The Rascals.
They have also raised over $1 million for Rochester organizations, including Golisano Children’s Hospital and Camp Good Days and Special Times — a fact that distinguishes them from the typical party band resume. The Rochester Music Hall of Fame induction committee made its assessment without ambiguity: “The Skycoasters define what it means to be a Local Legend. Their music, generosity and unwavering commitment to Rochester make them the perfect first recipients of this honor.”
Their set draws from decades of recognizable material — soul classics, R&B staples, funk standards — delivered by nine musicians who bring a full horn section and the kind of collective energy that a recorded set cannot replicate.
The Venue
The Vine Showroom at del Lago Resort & Casino is one of the stronger mid-sized rooms in the Finger Lakes region. With a capacity of 2,400 and a combination of reserved seating and general admission floor, the room has earned its Gold designation for Best Night Club in the Finger Lakes. Production values here run a consistent step above what most casino entertainment setups provide.
