Three Dog Night built their commercial peak between 1969 and 1974 on a premise that was simple and nearly radical: rather than developing original material, they identified the best songs from a roster of then-unknown writers and made them hits. Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Hoyt Axton, Laura Nyro, Paul Williams, Elton John: these were names the band championed before mainstream audiences had any idea who they were. What made that work was what one music journalist called “a distinctive and occasionally astonishing harmonic blend,” matched to a level of outside-material curation that other acts in the era rarely bothered with. The result was 21 consecutive Billboard Top 40 hits, three No. 1 singles, and a catalog that has stayed embedded in pop culture for more than five decades. On Saturday, February 13, they play The Vine Showroom at del Lago Resort & Casino in Waterloo.
About the Show
Now in their sixth decade of performing, Three Dog Night maintains a touring schedule of more than 90 dates a year, a pace that has produced nearly 3,000 shows since founding member Danny Hutton established the group in 1968. Between 1969 and 1974, the band accumulated seven Platinum-selling singles and 12 consecutive RIAA Certified Gold LPs, a commercial run that, by their own account, saw them move more records and sell more concert tickets than any other group of the era. That role, building their sound around songs by others rather than their own pen, is what gave the catalog its unusual depth, spanning pop, rock, and country with a range few acts from the era matched. The Finger Lakes date follows a 2026 touring run through casino floors, performing arts centers, and amphitheaters across the country. Songs like “Mama Told Me (Not To Come),” “Joy to the World,” “Black and White,” “Shambala,” and “One” have remained embedded in contemporary pop culture through radio play, commercials, and films. No support act has been announced for the Waterloo date. The current lineup is led by Hutton, joined by Woody Mankowski, Paul Kingery, Tim Hutton, Dash Hutton, and Howard Laravea.
