Upstate at Buffalo Iron Works | November 6, 2026

By Meg Andersen · July 28, 2026

Upstate releases Abalone on November 6, and they are spending that night at Buffalo Iron Works. The Hudson Valley indie folk quartet recorded the album live, straight to analog tape, deliberately leaving behind what the band called “endless possibilities for revisions and redoes.” The Buffalo stop lands on release day; it is as close to a proper release party as any show on this tour.

About the Show

Abalone is Upstate’s fourth record in a 15-year run that includes A Remedy (2015), Healing (2019), and the critically noted You Only Get a Few (2023), about which Atwood Magazine wrote that “few contemporary folk records dive quite as deep into the raw human experience.” Founding members Melanie Glenn, Mary Webster, and Harry D’Agostino, joined by Dylan McKinstry (who entered the band in 2019), built Abalone around interlocking ideas of light and transformation, drawing on the band members’ own transitions: marriage, parenthood, relocation. D’Agostino described the record’s throughline: “There’s a consistent idea of light and illumination bringing a kind of sensibility to circumstance throughout the songs on this record.” McKinstry framed it as a document of the band’s own life changes: “As we get a little older and our lives take on very different rhythms than they did 10 years ago, the songs have begun to reflect the kind of looking back you do when you transition from one chapter to the next.”

The band’s calling card is three-part vocal harmonies. Critics have compared them to the sibling harmonies of the Roches and to Lake Street Dive. Those voices carry over an eclectic instrumental palette that runs from upright bass and clarinet to mandolin and organ. Lead single “Circumstance” opens the album’s emotional center with an earthy electric guitar arrangement. Glenn described its subject: “The song Circumstance is a look into those moments in life that feel the hardest. When your foundation is cracked and you need to start again.” The 10-track Abalone arrives via RPF Records/Royal Potato Family; this Buffalo show is one of 18 stops on an East Coast tour running September through November 2026.
