Empire Live

Albany, NY

About This Venue

On August 26, 2021, Cold War Kids took the stage at 93 North Pearl Street and Albany got the downtown concert venue it had been missing. Empire Live opened that night in a gut-renovated former REP theater space, the brainchild of promoters Ted Etoll, Dave Siewert, and Stan Levinstone — the same team behind Upstate Concert Hall, which had operated in Clifton Park but outgrown its suburban location. The move downtown was five years in the making, starting with a site search in 2016, and the result is a two-stage complex that has quickly become the Capital Region’s essential club-scale concert venue.

Two Stages, Two Experiences

Empire Live, the main room, holds roughly 1,000 to 1,200 standing for concerts. The stage is properly equipped for national touring productions, with a sound system and lighting rig built for the room rather than inherited from a previous tenant. The floor is general admission, open, and the energy on a packed night is the kind of thing that makes you forget you are in a mid-size city. The ceiling height helps — the room breathes even when it is full.

Empire Underground, the basement stage, holds 350 and programs the more intimate end of the spectrum. This is where you see the up-and-coming acts, the genre-specific bookings that thrive in a tight room, and the artists who are six months away from being too big for a 350-cap space. The Underground is where discovery happens, and regulars know to check its calendar independently from the main room.

What Plays Here

Empire Live’s booking has been aggressive and genre-fluid since opening night. GWAR, Sebastian Bach, Circle Jerks, and Overkill have satisfied the metal and punk crowd. Dashboard Confessional and The Wonder Years have drawn the emo and pop-punk faithful. Umphrey’s McGee pulls the jam contingent. Buckethead has done his thing. CupcakKe and Reverend Horton Heat have stretched the definition of what a North Pearl Street venue books on a weeknight. The common denominator is ambition — Empire Live does not play it safe.

Getting There and Parking

Empire Live sits on North Pearl Street in downtown Albany, a short walk from the Capitol complex and the dining corridor along State and Lark streets. There is no dedicated parking lot, but free street parking is available throughout downtown after 5 PM on weekdays and all day on weekends.

For garages, the Green-Hudson Garage at 45 Hudson Avenue is a short walk and charges $5 for weekday evenings and weekends. The Quackenbush Garage at 25 Orange Street is another solid option at the same price. The ParkAlbany app handles metered parking during business hours and helps you locate available spots.

The North Pearl Street Scene

Empire Live landed in a neighborhood with genuine dining density. Ama Cocina at 4 Sheridan Avenue does modern Mexican with a cocktail list that justifies arriving early — it is steps from the venue. Yono’s Restaurant at 25 Chapel Street brings decades of refined dining to a two-minute walk. 677 Prime on Broadway is the marquee steakhouse option. For post-show drinks, The City Beer Hall at 42 Howard Street has craft beer and a late-night crowd, and The Hollow Bar and Kitchen on North Pearl programs its own live music — making a two-show night entirely possible.

Why Empire Live Matters

Albany spent years watching mid-size touring acts skip the Capital Region or play suburban rooms that lacked the energy of a proper downtown venue. Empire Live solved that problem. The two-stage format gives the city a room for both the established act drawing a thousand fans and the rising name building an audience 350 people at a time. For a venue that has only been open since 2021, its impact on Albany’s concert culture has been immediate and significant.

Insider Tips

  • Check both calendars. Empire Live and Empire Underground program independently. Some of the best shows happen in the basement.
  • Free street parking after 5 PM. Downtown Albany meters are free evenings and weekends. Park within a few blocks and walk.
  • The floor fills front to back. General admission standing means early arrival equals better positioning. Doors typically open 30-60 minutes before the opener.
  • Ama Cocina is the pre-show call. Modern Mexican, strong cocktails, steps from the door. The margaritas are not messing around.
  • The Hollow for a double header. If Empire Live lets out early, The Hollow on North Pearl often has its own show going. Walk five minutes and extend the night.
