Cyril Neville at Colony Woodstock | September 12, 2026

By Tanya Reeves · July 16, 2026

Cyril Neville did not come to the Grateful Dead from the outside looking in. As he describes it, what drew him to those shows was “the lights and the smell of incense and herbs in the air, and the feeling of being in an alternate musical loving peaceful space” — and anyone who has felt the communal pull of a Meters groove or the second-line surge of a Neville Brothers performance will recognize that space immediately. The man the music world calls “the Uptown Ruler” has been conjuring it for more than 50 years. On Saturday, September 12, he brings his “Plays the Dead” tribute show to Colony Woodstock‘s outdoor Garden Main Stage, not as an imitator, but as a peer.

About the Show

Neville, a two-time Grammy winner and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and a founding member of both The Meters and The Neville Brothers, performs “Plays the Dead” backed by his son Omari Neville and The Fuel. The Woodstock date is the third night of a northeastern run that opened September 10 in Fairfield, Connecticut, and closes September 16 at Brooklyn Bowl in New York. For Neville, the tribute comes from a genuine place: he has said “nothing was ever rehearsed, it was always spontaneous and free” of the Dead’s performance approach, a description that maps closely onto the improvisation at the center of the New Orleans tradition he helped build.

He arrives in Woodstock fresh from Don’t Wait Til I’m Gone, his first solo album in several years, released June 1, 2026. Produced by trumpeter and co-writer Shamarr Allen, the record gathers Aaron Neville, Leo Nocentelli, Ivan Neville, Kermit Ruffins, and members of the Hot 8 Brass Band — a summoning of New Orleans musical royalty that Neville has called a “danceable, feel-good musical gumbo.”

Venue & Logistics

Colony Woodstock, at 22 Rock City Rd in Woodstock, opened in 1929 and was renovated beginning in 2015 by artists Alexia and Neil Howard. Located in the Hudson Valley, the venue features an outdoor Garden Main Stage where the September 12 show is set. Colony notes the performance will move indoors if weather requires it. Doors open at 5 p.m.; the show runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. With a capacity of 150, it is an unusually intimate room for an artist of Neville’s standing.
