The Montreal trio Dopethrone describes their own sound as “so vile it’s a controlled substance.” They mean it. Vince, Tony T-Bone, and Myke have been building their brand of “Slutch” since 2008 — their word for the fused wreckage of sludge, doom, black metal, and blues running through everything they do. Broke Sabbath, their 2024 record, is their first full-length in six years, and press coverage calls it their most outlandish and heaviest yet.

The Bug Jar date falls fourth on the UNIWORSE TOUR, a nine-date September US run named for the Broke Sabbath track “Universe,” which press coverage describes as “bludgeoning listeners with brutal riffing whilst denouncing humanity as nothing more than a virus on the planet.” That framing fits the record: “seedy psychedelic grooves” running up against moments of “maddening guitar shredding,” all filtered through the nihilism the band has carried from Hochelaga.
Support is two bands worth showing up early for. PLQ MRX are a Philadelphia masked quintet who came out of Plaque Marks and put out their debut EP Cumgitsum in 2025 on Reptilian Records. Their sound starts in noise rock and gets stranger fast: distorted guitars, detuned trombone, clown samples, and drunken howls shaped into what critics have called “the chaotic rites of Butthole Surfers’ early years.” Singer Alrightus was direct about the direction: “Noise rock was the base when we started. But I feel more aligned with ’70s funk and obscure European rock than anything else.” Opening the night: Necrostalker, a Rochester death metal act on Sevared Records with 2024 releases After The Fall and Here Today, Gone Tomorrow. Groove-infused old school death metal, and hometown. Bassist Oz Asbjorn also handles Rochester metal booking, which may explain why this bill hangs together as well as it does.
Venue & Logistics
The Bug Jar on Monroe Ave in Rochester holds 120 people and is one of the better rooms for heavy music in the Finger Lakes region. Dopethrone has played Roadburn Festival, the European doom circuit’s most credentialed stage. They are playing a bar. That is the right call for music this dense and physical. Doors at 7:00 p.m., show at 8:00 p.m. The show is 18+ with advance tickets, 21+ at the door; advance tickets for ages 18–20 are limited to 10 per show.
