Dreamer – The Supertramp Experience makes its case with an unusual commitment: eight musicians, no backing tracks, performing Crime of the Century front to back and then through the greatest-hits catalog. Supertramp’s arrangements built accessible pop out of complex, layered parts (horns, vintage keys, competing vocal lines) and the live version needs all of it to be present. On Thursday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m., Dreamer brings that full lineup to the Kingston Grand Theatre’s Rosen Auditorium.
About the Show
The Toronto-based ensemble bills itself as “the world’s most authentic tribute to Supertramp,” and the claim rests on specifics. The eight-piece band is built around what it describes as “some of North America’s finest A-list musicians,” performing without sequenced backing tracks or computerized parts. The instrumental core spans vintage Wurlitzer keyboards, clarinet, saxophone, flute, and trombone, all played live.
The vocal side is anchored by Emmy award-winning Phil Naro in the Roger Hodgson role and keyboardist Rich Hamelin covering Rick Davies. Getting the two-singer interplay right is the defining challenge of any Supertramp tribute; both Naro and Hamelin have been praised for “uncanny” accuracy in rendering the original parts.
The set covers more than 17 compositions, opening with the Crime of the Century title track and moving through “Breakfast in America,” “The Logical Song,” “Take the Long Way Home,” and “Give a Little Bit.” Costume changes between sets and period film projections give the performance its theatrical frame. Reviewers describe the live show as “a carbon copy musical replica” of the original recordings, with particular praise for vocal accuracy and arrangement depth. The Kingston date is part of a multi-venue Ontario run presented by the Beaches International Jazz Festival.
