He Is Legend has spent two decades being exactly the kind of band the music industry doesn’t know how to file — too heavy for alt-radio, too melodic for the metal underground, and too road-worn to care about either argument. Long described as a cult classic, the Wilmington, NC outfit brings that road-earned identity to Montage Music Hall in a year when they’ve been marking the 20th anniversary of Suck Out the Poison, the 2006 record that first made those contradictions cohere.
About the Show
The five-piece — vocalist Schuylar Croom, lead guitarist Adam Tanbouz, rhythm guitarist McKenzie Bell, bassist Matt Williams, and drummer Steven Bache — formed around 2000, their name drawn from Richard Matheson’s 1950s horror novel I Am Legend. Their discography now spans seven full-lengths: I Am Hollywood (2004), Suck Out the Poison (2006), It Hates You (2009), Heavy Fruit (2014), Few (2017), White Bat (2019), and Endless Hallway (2022). Their sound has long resisted easy categorization, blending metalcore, sludge, psych-rock, and southern rock in proportions that shift from record to record.
Endless Hallway, released on Spinefarm Records in November 2022, arrived under difficult circumstances: Croom recorded the vocals while managing serious health complications from his diabetes, eventually driving 10 hours to Nashville to finish the sessions at Mitch Marlow’s studio. The band called it “easily our most aggressive album to date.” Croom’s own account is starker: “I hopped in the car and drove 10 hours to Nashville to record at Mitch Marlow’s place. I’m a different person now. The universe throws those things at you to make you stronger.”
He Is Legend has built their following through sustained touring — more than 664 documented performances, with time on bills alongside Killswitch Engage, Dragonforce, Chimaira, and Maylene and the Sons of Disaster. The fall 2026 run continues the year-long marking of Suck Out the Poison‘s 20th anniversary; September found them at the Louder Than Life festival in Louisville before the fall club circuit picked back up. In Angels & Excide opens the Rochester date.
Venue & Logistics
Montage Music Hall, a 400-capacity club at 50 Chestnut St. in downtown Rochester, is an unusually intimate room for a band with this touring resume — part of the western New York regional circuit that tends to catch national acts between larger markets. Doors and show both begin at 6 p.m. This is a 16-and-older event.
