If you have been paying attention to the Western New York music scene for any stretch of time, Johnny Hart and The Mess is not a new name. But if Saturday, May 16 at Buffalo Iron Works is your first time catching them live, you are about to understand why this band has been one of the better answers to the question of what you actually do on a Saturday night in Buffalo.

About Johnny Hart and The Mess

Formed in Buffalo in 2013, Johnny Hart and The Mess have spent over a decade building one of the most versatile catalogs in the Western NY original music scene. The genre tag is alt-rock, but the actual range runs wider — rock, blues, pop, country, jam, and funk all show up in their sets, often within the same show. Jeff Miers of The Buffalo News called them a “Soulfully urgent alt-rock powerhouse,” and that description has stuck for good reason.

The touring resume backs it up. They have shared stages with The Black Crowes, Marcus King, The Wailers, Dark Star Orchestra, Fitz and the Tantrums, Grace Potter, and The Sheepdogs, among others — a list that puts them firmly above the regional circuit. Their most recent studio album, Moonlite Motel, came out in 2024. They opened 2026 with a live record, Live at Town Ballroom, and a new single, “Soundoff,” is currently out.

Opening the night is Buffalo Dead All Stars — a rotating collective of roughly twenty musicians dedicated to exploring the music of the Grateful Dead, and a group that knows Buffalo Iron Works well.

About Buffalo Iron Works

Buffalo Iron Works is a 500-capacity club at 49 Illinois St. in Buffalo’s Western NY music scene — general admission, standing room only. For a Saturday bill this strong, being there before 8:00 PM puts you exactly where you want to be on the floor. This is a room where the distance between the band and the audience disappears fast.
