Eleven years into what was supposed to be a reunion, Luna is simply a band again — the same four-piece, the same chiming guitar lines and graceful melodic indie rock that made Rolling Stone call their album Penthouse “one of the essential recordings of the ’90s.” The band hits Asbury Hall in Buffalo on Sept. 26 with Baltimore and Pittsburgh already sold out on this fall run.
About the Show
Dean Wareham formed Luna in New York City in 1991 after the breakup of Galaxie 500, and spent the next 14 years releasing seven studio albums before the band dissolved in 2005. The reunion in 2015 brought the current lineup together: Wareham on vocals and guitar, Britta Phillips on bass, Sean Eden on guitar, and Lee Wall on drums. In 2017 the band released A Sentimental Education, a covers album filtering classic rock, post-punk, and prog through what their booking agency described as “Wareham’s singularly dreamy vision,” alongside the six-song instrumental EP A Place of Greater Safety. Live Rendezvous, released in 2022 from reunion-era shows at the Chapel in San Francisco, captured how much the band was “realizing how special it was, not so much to relive or recapture the past, but to move these albums into the present.” That still sounds right.
Opening is Constant Smiles, the Queens-based collective led by songwriter Ben Jones. The project began in 2009 and has built a discography of roughly two dozen releases, the band operating, per their official site, “more like a collective than a traditional band” — shifting membership, shifting sound, contributions from more than 50 collaborators. Their 2025 Felte debut Moonflowers earned a 90 from AllMusic, built on what the venue page describes as “subdued acoustic instruments, understated strings, electronic undercurrents, and soft-touch performances.” The album includes a lyrical collaboration with Cassandra Jenkins on “Time Measured In Moonflowers.” If you have been sleeping on Constant Smiles, this is the time to show up early.
