Mariachi El Bronx at Sherman Theater | September 24, 2026

By David Chen-Watkins · July 22, 2026

Most crossover projects raid an aesthetic. Mariachi El Bronx went after a curriculum. When The Bronx (the Los Angeles punk band) arranged their song “Dirty Leaves” as a mariachi lament for a 2006 television appearance, guitarist Joby J. Ford and vocalist Matt Caughthran didn’t reach for approximations. They studied norteno, jorocho, juasteka, bolero, and corridos, the distinct regional traditions of Mexican music, treating them as forms with their own rigor rather than source material to be approximated. “Mariachi has rules,” Caughthran said. “We learned everything we could out of respect.” The mariachi community, by most accounts, loved them for it.

About the Show

That project, now two decades into an existence that began as a television accident, brings the You Ése Tour ’26 to Sherman Theater on Thursday, September 24. The tour runs September 17 through October 23, spanning dates across North America and including a slot at Riot Fest in Chicago; Caughthran has called it “the longest headlining tour we’ve ever done.” The ensemble arrived at fall in good form: they completed a co-headlining Australian run with The Bronx in March 2026, billed as “Super Show! Band on Band Action!” The eight-piece lineup includes Caughthran on vocals, Joby J. Ford on guitar, Brad Magers on trumpet, Ken Horne on jarana, Vincent Hidalgo on guitarrón, and Ray Suen on violin. Their 2009 debut featured accordion from David Hidalgo of Los Lobos; they have since performed alongside Foo Fighters and the Killers and appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk. Caughthran’s case for the crossover is made plainly: “Punk rock and mariachi music are very similar in soul. It’s working class music. It’s real music.” Bedouin Soundclash, the indie rock/reggae band active since 2001, and Max Diaz support.
