Mike Doughty at Anthology | April 3, 2026

By Rachel Torrey · March 30, 2026

Before there was a category for what Mike Doughty does, he was already doing it. The former Soul Coughing frontman — the voice behind “Super Bon Bon,” “Circles,” and the group’s singular low-end groove — played Anthology in Rochester on April 3, 2026, and the room was exactly right for it.

The Soul Coughing Years — and What Came After

Soul Coughing occupied its own lane in the mid-’90s: jazz samples underneath, hip-hop rhythms, Doughty’s hyperarticulate speak-sing delivery running circles around everything else on the radio. When the band imploded at the end of the decade, it was ugly. Doughty wrote about it with characteristic directness in his 2012 memoir The Book of Drugs — one of the most candid accounts of the music industry, addiction, and creative survival you’ll find in print. Reading it is its own kind of education.

What followed was a solo career that deserves more credit than it gets. Stripped back to acoustic guitar and that unmistakable rhythmic voice, Doughty rebuilt from scratch. Albums like Haughty Melodic and The Question Jar Show showed an artist working through something real and coming out with songs worth keeping. “Busting Up a Starbucks,” “Looking at the World From the Bottom of a Well” — these aren’t nostalgia pieces. They’re originals.

The Live Show

Live, Doughty is magnetic in the particular way that good storytellers are magnetic. He talks between songs — honest, funny, a little strange — and then snaps into performance with a presence that catches you off guard. The voice can shift from conversational to soaring without telegraphing anything. He’s the kind of performer who makes a small room feel like the right room.

Anthology in Rochester is exactly that: an intimate venue in the Finger Lakes region with exceptional sound and an audience that shows up because they actually care. If you know the Soul Coughing records or have followed Doughty’s solo catalog, this is an artist who rewards your attention. If you only know “Super Bon Bon” from a car commercial, you’re just getting started.
