Steve Lacy came out of The Internet — the blog-era collective that spent years mapping the territory between neo-soul, indie rock, and funk — and everything since has been an extension of that space, testing how far the tradition can stretch before it becomes something new. Oh yeah?, his third studio album, is the most honest test yet: self-produced, built from acoustic guitars, synths, and head-spinning experimental arrangements, with Erykah Badu and SZA both in the room. The Oh Yeah? Tour brings it to Place Bell in Laval on Tuesday, October 6.
About the Show
The 27-date North American run launches September 27, marking Lacy’s first headline tour since 2022’s “Give You The World Tour” — the first time he has played North American dates in four years. This is also the first major live vehicle for Oh yeah?, released July 17 on RCA Records and Lacy’s follow-up to the Grammy-winning Gemini Rights, which produced “Bad Habit,” his 2022 number-one on the Billboard Hot 100. Four years between albums after a hit that size is its own kind of statement; Oh yeah? makes another one. NME called it a “radical display of honesty,” the record working through self-sabotage, personal accountability, late-millennial dating anxiety, and the harder weight of making sense of the world at a particular moment. The sound is equally restless: acoustic guitars alongside synths, production critics described as “woozy,” ten self-produced tracks that resist the obvious move. Critics singled out “bebe” as the record’s most assured moment (“bewitched, playful, genuine,” in Our Culture’s phrase), a lightness that cuts through the heavier parts of the album. Getting Erykah Badu on the record is not incidental; it is a declaration of lineage, a grounding in the tradition Lacy has been building toward since before the mainstream found him. Collaborators also include SZA, Tyler the Creator, Cecile Believe, Fousheé, Porches, Ravyn Lenae, and Alice Smith. Laval is the second of three Canadian stops, the night after Toronto and ahead of a late-November date in Vancouver.

Place Bell sits in Laval, just north of Montréal, the Quebec stop on a tour that also plays Radio City Music Hall, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and the Hollywood Bowl. For fans across the north country, this is the closest date on the run. The October 6 show is all-ages. Doors open at 8 p.m.
