The Marshall Tucker Band has been a going concern for more than fifty years, outlasting the deaths of two Caldwell brothers, the commercial collapse of Southern rock as a radio format, and enough lineup changes to constitute a full personnel audit. Doug Gray, the last of the original six, has kept the band on the road through all of it — and the name of their current run, the “While I’m Young Tour,” reads as either defiance or dry humor depending on where you’re sitting. On Sunday, August 8, that tour stops at The Haven of the Wild in Chittenango for an outdoor evening with special guest Hunter Root.
About the Show
The Marshall Tucker Band formed in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1971 with a lineup built around Toy Caldwell’s guitar and songwriting, Tommy Caldwell on bass, Gray on lead vocals, Paul Riddle on drums, George McCorkle on rhythm guitar, and Jerry Eubanks on flute and saxophone — an instrumental combination that gave Southern rock one of its more distinctive textures. Signed to Capricorn Records, they released their self-titled debut in 1973. Their 1975 album Searchin’ for a Rainbow remains their commercial high-water mark, home to “Fire on the Mountain,” whose lyrics now appear at Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame.
The catalog has aged well enough to accumulate more than one billion Pandora streams, earning the band’s Billionaires Plaque in 2023. Ultimate Classic Rock named “Can’t You See” the No. 1 Southern Rock Song; CMT ranked it No. 4. “Heard It in a Love Song” reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. The music has appeared in Breaking Bad and Blow and been covered by Hank Williams Jr. and Waylon Jennings.
The losses behind this run are not trivial. Tommy Caldwell died in 1980. Toy Caldwell in 1993. Jerry Eubanks — the last original member besides Gray — left in 1996. Gray has been the keeper of the name since. “Over fifty years later, we continue to grow, improve and intensely bring the fans what they love,” he said in announcing the tour. “We believe 2026 will be the best year yet. While I’m young!” Special guest Hunter Root opens the evening.

The Haven of the Wild is an outdoor event venue in Chittenango, in central New York. This is a general admission, standing-only show; chairs can be purchased at the door, and outside chairs are permitted behind reserved seating. Pit Pass tickets offer closer stage access in a designated standing area near the front. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
