Wednesday at Asbury Hall | March 31, 2026

By Eli Thorne · March 30, 2026

Wednesday, the Asheville five-piece whose 2023 album Rat Saw God landed on virtually every year-end list that mattered, played Asbury Hall in Buffalo on March 31, 2026, with Florida post-hardcore outfit Gouge Away in direct support.

Rat Saw God and Why It Hit

If you missed the buzz, here’s what you need to know: Wednesday makes guitar music that sounds genuinely dangerous again. Karly Hartzman’s songwriting occupies a specific emotional space — spare and conversational in the verses, then crashing into something enormous when the chorus arrives. The band can turn a domestic image into a gut-punch in under a minute. The feedback isn’t decoration. The noise is structural.

The record drew comparisons to Waxahatchee and Snail Mail, which is accurate enough in the emotional vicinity but undersells how heavy Wednesday is willing to get. This is alt-country that shows its shoegaze scars, and the live set doesn’t flatten any of it. Hartzman is a compelling frontperson — present, direct, and very clearly not operating on autopilot. The band behind her treats volume as a tool, not a fallback.

Gouge Away

Gouge Away is no soft opener. The Florida four-piece trades in coiled, disciplined post-hardcore that builds pressure and releases it at precisely the right moment. Their 2023 record Deep Sage pulls from the same emotional register that makes Wednesday’s work land hard. This is a paired bill in the truest sense — not a random booking, but two bands who make noise from the same honest place.

Asbury Hall at Babeville

Asbury Hall inside Buffalo’s Babeville complex is one of Western New York’s best rooms for this kind of show. The converted church architecture gives big guitar music room to breathe and punish in equal measure — the reverb works for you. Babeville sits on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, accessible from across the region.

This is a show for people who care about rock music that still has something at stake. Rat Saw God was one of 2023’s essential records. Catching the tour in a room this good was the payoff.
