Pet Sounds turned 60 this year. Al Jardine, Beach Boys co-founder, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and the man who sang lead on “Help Me, Rhonda,” is one of the diminishing handful of people with a reasonable claim on what that record sounded like when it was made. Rather than let the anniversary pass as a marketing occasion, he has rebuilt the band that performed those arrangements alongside Brian Wilson for over two decades and put them back on tour. The February engagement at Seneca Niagara’s Bear’s Den is framed as a tribute to the late Wilson, and the personnel behind it make that framing credible.
About the Show
Billed as Al Jardine & The Pet Sounds Band, the Feb. 13 concert is the second of two consecutive nights at Bear’s Den. Jardine, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001, reformed the ensemble in 2025 from the core of Brian Wilson’s longtime touring group; the shows have been framed explicitly as a tribute to the late Wilson. Music director Darian Sahanaja, Wilson’s longtime bandleader, leads the band, and Al’s son Matt Jardine handles lead vocal duties — noted by sources for “youthful Brian Wilson-like vocals.” The full lineup includes Rob Bonfiglio and Emeen Zarookian on guitar, Bob Lizik on bass, Michael D’Amico on drums, Jim Laspesa on percussion, Paul Von Mertens on saxophone, and Gary Griffin and Debbie Shair on keyboards alongside Sahanaja.
The setlist draws from Beach Boys standards including “California Girls,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” and “I Get Around,” with material from the 1977 cult record The Beach Boys Love You alongside the anniversary Pet Sounds content. Jardine has described performing with this group as feeling “like I am in the studio again, with a live audience this time.” The U.S. run launched in July 2026 following an Australian leg that included stops at the Sydney Opera House; the Niagara Falls dates extend the tour into 2027.
Jardine also released the EP Islands in the Sun in 2025, featuring collaborations with Neil Young and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
