Fran Lebowitz stopped publishing books sometime in the 1980s. What she built instead was a career as one of the most electrifying live presences in American letters, and that is the reason she keeps filling rooms. On Wednesday, March 31, she brings her evening of acerbic cultural observation to Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, and the New York Times Book Review’s description of her as “an important humorist in the classic tradition” feels, if anything, understated.
About the Show
Lebowitz is the author of Metropolitan Life and Social Studies, the essay collections that made her name, later compiled in The Fran Lebowitz Reader (translated into nine languages and a bestseller in the United Kingdom in 2021). On stage she holds forth on contemporary culture, media, politics, and what the venue describes as her “distinctive pet peeves” — the format she has refined into one of the most reliable evenings on the literary speaking circuit. Martin Scorsese has directed two films about her: the HBO documentary Public Speaking (2010) and the Emmy-nominated Netflix series Pretend It’s a City (2021), which brought her observations to a generation that had never cracked Metropolitan Life. The Paris Review describes her approach as “dry wit with sharp social critique” delivered through “pointed, economical prose.”
Her screen credits extend further: she appeared as Judge Janice Goldberg on Law & Order from 2001 through 2007, and in documentary films including Regarding Susan Sontag (2014) and Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (2016). She received the 2021 Forte dei Marmi Festival della Satira Lifetime Achievement Award.
Lebowitz has been active on the touring circuit in recent years, with dates at Barbican Hall in London (October 2025) and venues across Australia and San Francisco earlier that year. The Buffalo show is presented in partnership with Just Buffalo Literary Center. Her August 2026 appearance at Guild Hall in East Hampton sold out, which tells you something about what a live evening with Lebowitz has become.
