Lynyrd Skynyrd’s catalog has an unusual durability — it is the rare southern rock body of work that still commands a theater audience decades after its peak years, and not because the original band is working rooms of this scale. Southern Steel, a six-piece New Jersey tribute outfit with a multi-state Northeast touring footprint, brings its Classic Skynyrd Live production to Paramount Hudson Valley in Peekskill on Wednesday, November 25. The date falls the night before Thanksgiving, which tends to put people in exactly the right frame of mind for loud guitar music and a late ride home.
About the Show
Classic Skynyrd Live is Southern Steel’s tribute production, built around Lynyrd Skynyrd’s legacy in defining southern rock during the 1970s. The set draws from the catalog that has outlasted its era: “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Free Bird,” “Simple Man,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “That Smell,” “Call Me the Breeze,” and “I Know a Little,” among others. The six-piece configuration — Tommy Kelly on lead vocals; Dave Sorber and Joe Barker on dual lead and slide guitar; Tom Tibaldi on keyboards and rhythm guitar; Ray Jandura on bass; Jay Skar on drums — is purpose-built to replicate the multi-guitar layering that distinguished Skynyrd’s live sound at its peak. The dual slide guitar setup moves the band closer to the original architecture than most tribute acts attempt. Southern Steel also serves as the requested opening act for The Outlaws on their Northeast tours, which situates them credibly within the southern rock lineage. Multiple venue listings across the Northeast describe the show generating “standing ovations and calls for encores time after time,” and the band’s own framing is direct: this is the music “the way it was meant to be heard: loud, live, and legendary.” No supporting act is listed for the Paramount Hudson Valley date.
Venue & Logistics
Paramount Hudson Valley is a 1,024-seat theater in Peekskill — a mid-size room of the kind that southern rock catalog shows are built for. Big enough to sustain the volume and spread of a six-piece band working dual slide guitars, contained enough that the crowd’s energy has somewhere to land. Showtime is 8 p.m.
