Defeated Sanity at Montage Music Hall | May 1, 2026
German brutal death metal outfit Defeated Sanity brings their technical intensity to Rochester’s Montage Music Hall on Friday, May 1 — and if you have never caught this band live, your Friday night just found its purpose.
About Defeated Sanity
Defeated Sanity operates at a level that makes most heavy bands sound like they are playing in a different weight class. The four-piece from Germany — Lille Gruber on drums, Jacob Schmidt on bass, Josh Welshman on vocals, and Vaughn Stoffey on guitar — has spent years pushing brutal death metal somewhere most bands have not bothered to go: into jazz-influenced rhythmic territory, with a precision that owes as much to classical training as it does to the pit.
Their catalog is the argument. Psalms of the Moribund, Chapters of Repugnance, The Sanguinary Impetus, and their latest, Chronicles of Lunacy, form a body of work that holds up under the kind of close listening most heavy records do not survive. This is extreme music that rewards attention — which is not a sentence you get to write very often.
The Venue
Montage Music Hall is a Rochester staple operated by Rochester Entertainment, sitting in the heart of downtown at Chestnut and Lawn. The room has a consistent track record with heavy and independent bookings, and this show slots right into that tradition. If you are driving in from Syracuse, Ithaca, or Buffalo, budget your arrival time — downtown Rochester on a Friday night moves at its own pace, and street parking fills early.
Show time is 6:30 PM. This event is open to ages 16 and up.

Tickets are on sale now through Etix — grab yours before the room fills up. For more upcoming shows, browse the full Rochester and Finger Lakes concert calendar.
